Restoration of Lowestoft’s Ravine Bridge Completed

Technicus Consulting are pleased to announce the successful completion of the restoration of the Grade II Listed Ravine Bridge in Lowestoft.

The bridge was officially reopened on Monday 26th February 2024 following completion of extensive structural repairs and renovation work.

The project began in March 2020 when Technicus Consulting was commissioned by East Suffolk Council to conduct a structural survey of the bridge due to concerns about its structural condition. Our survey identified various structural issues, leading to us undertaking a phase of condition monitoring which eventually resulted in closure of the bridge in December 2020 for safety reasons. During this time we developed a scheme of structural repair and refurbishment works for the bridge to restore its structural integrity and allow it to be safely re-opened.

Restoration work started in August 2022, and involved extensive repairs to the original wrought iron beams and replacement of numerous severely corroded structural elements, some of which had been installed during a previous restoration phase of works. The bridge also received a new reinforced concrete deck as the original deck had to be removed to allow access for inspection and repair of the top sections of the bridge beams which had suffered severe corrosion.

The Ravine road and footpath below he bridge were temporarily closed for the duration of the project to facilitate the safe execution of the works, including the erection of access scaffolding and temporary structural restraints.

The collaboration between Technicus Consulting, East Suffolk Council, Hyams Chartered Quantity Surveyors, Roberts Sneesby Health & Safety Ltd, and B & M McHugh Ltd has ensured that this historic structure can continue to be a part of Lowestoft’s heritage to be enjoyed by the local community.
