Gorleston Seafront Shelters
The Promenade, Gorleston-on-Sea
Following concerns regarding spalling and corrosion, Technicus Consulting was appointed by GYBC to undertake an appraisal of the shelter structures. These were found to be beyond economic repair and, consequently we recommended reconstruction.
Due to significant economic constraints, we needed to provide an aesthetically pleasing arrangement, within a Conservation Area, and provide a low-maintenance structure to provide longevity within an aggressive environment.
Technicus Consulting developed a scheme incorporating stainless steel ground anchors to stabilise the existing retaining wall, negating the need for site investigation and expensive temporary propping. The scheme incorporated powder-coated, galvanised, mild steel columns and balusters, fabricated to mimic cast iron components. Precast concrete beams and deck slabs, with stainless steel and resin bespoke jointing details, provided robust structures. Asphalt decking was utilised to reflect the original construction and in keeping with the Conservation Area status.
Technicus Consulting undertook contract administration, including preparation of contract documents and tendering to JCT Intermediate Contract 2011, as well as Civil and Structural Engineering services.
Technicus was awarded a Commendation for the project, in the Regional Institution of Structural Engineers “Structural Excellence” Awards in October 2014.
