Structural Appraisal of Historic Barn

Project Description

Hall Farm Barn

Hemsby, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

Hall Farm Barn is a very substantial thatched early c14th century 5 stead aisled barn.

The building comprises seven main oak cross frames to six full bays, plus small bays to either end. This magnificent structure has been classified as a Grade 1 listed building.

The superlative timber frame has been modified many times during its circa 700 hundred year life, but suffered significant storm damage during 2015. The resulting partial collapse and distortions to the roof and brickwork walls left the building in a parlous state.

Technicus’ brief was to undertake a visual appraisal of the damaged structure and debris; meeting with the Conservation Officer; agree emergency scaffolding support to the remaining structure to stabilise the building, determine the collapse mechanism and report back.

The report was required as part of a major insurance claim and was necessary to inform the next stage of work, which will include design and detailing of an internal scaffold support system. In addition to stabilising the structure, the scaffold will provide safe access for inspection of members at high level and provide
working access for remedial works.

Following stabilisation and further investigations, the remedial works will comprise dismantling and rebuilding using materials to sympathetically repair the original frame and secondary members, masonry repairs and rethatching.
