Ravine Bridge Refurbishment

Project Description

Ravine Bridge Refurbishment

Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk

Technicus Consulting was appointed in 2012 to undertake a condition survey of the Ravine Bridge. This report concluded the bridge had suffered severe corrosion to parts of the structural frame, and that parts of the timber decking structure were also in need of replacement.

In 2013 Technicus Consulting was appointed by GYBS to design and tender a contract of bridge refurbishment works in order to restore the bridge back to its former glory. Local Authority maintenance budget cuts meant these works needed to be completed within a very tight fixed budget. The extent and nature of the repair works were carefully considered in order to ensure the client achieved best value for money, whilst also minimising future ongoing maintenance costs as far as reasonably practicable.

The refurbishment works incorporated:

  • renovation of the hardwood timber decking;
  • blast cleaning, localised repairs, and repainting of the structural framing elements to restore structural integrity;
  • wholesale replacement of the severely corroded, and previously repaired, principal frame curved top beams with new galvanised items;
  • replacement low maintenance balustrading to match recently refurbished seafront shelters;
  • localised abutment repairs and new baluster foundations.
