Technicus Consulting was appointed to undertake the roles of Contract Administrator, Civil Engineers and Structural Engineers for the first phase of the conversion of a range of derelict and semi-derelict barns to form purpose built holiday accommodation, in a farm setting.
The scheme was partially European Union funded, as part of an initiative to provide diversification to farms and bring derelict agricultural buildings back into use.
The brief included enabling works for the scheme to comply with planning conditions. This included the construction of a new access road to the farm and highway access, allowing the existing road to provide separate access to the new development. The scheme also involved the relocation of a BT pole and equipment, diversion of a footpath and modification of an existing highway access.
Due to the poor permeability of the sub-soil at shallow depth, it was necessary to introduce a drainage field of perforated drains, drainage medium and geotextile to an array of trenches, over a large paddock, to dispose of foul water.
The design included the introduction of a sewage treatment works, involving trench sheeting, pumping and de-watering to enable installation.
