Extension to Waveney House Gapton Hall Industrial Estate
Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Technicus Consulting was appointed by Holmes Building Contractors to provide structural design and consultancy services for a new 2 storey extension to Fugro Survey Ltd’s existing office building in Great Yarmouth. The extension provides much needed additional office space, and an accessible roof deck to allow testing of Fugro’s communications equipment.
The new extension structure was designed to be structurally independent and stable until such time that it was weather proof and a link into the existing building could be formed. This minimised disruption to the operation of Waveney House and Fugro’s staff during the construction works which are client was thankful for.
The extension comprises a series of steel portal frames, braced out-of-plane by steel wind portals. This structural arrangement was adopted to prevent alternative diagonal bracing members obscuring the ribbon windows at both ground and first floor levels. External wall construction comprised a cavity masonry plinth wall at ground floor level, with Kingspan horizontal spanning composite cladding on cladding rails above.
The new extension is constructed off a reinforced concrete raft foundation with cantilevered edges to support the new columns where these are located over existing foundations. The cantilievered elements prevent load being transferred from the new structure into the existing foundations which may otherwise have caused potential settlement issues.
