Technicus Consulting was established in June 2010 by Barry Hipwell, Barrie Burgess and John Clare. The expertise brought by the principals covers more than four decades working in senior roles for consultancy practices in the eastern region. The practice has subsequently expanded to become a cohesive team of qualified engineers, technicians and support staff. Kevin Buttle joined the management team as an Associate in 2014.

Barrie is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 35 years’ experience in the construction industry. Structural Engineering experience includes a wide range of projects including schools, residential, multi-storey, theatres, sports & leisure facilities, churches, industrial and commercial premises.
Design experience in all principal structural materials. Extensive experience of preparing defects investigations and reports for a broad range of buildings and structures, including listed buildings, ancient monuments and marine and offshore structures.

Kevin is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry covering civil and structural engineering design, structural surveys, condition assessment reports, remedial works, repair specifications, development of maintenance plans and project management.
His experience covers design and review of new-build and re-modelling works for the residential, commercial, healthcare, industrial and retail sectors on both green and brownfield sites. Kevin is also experienced in the design and specification of offshore structures for the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors, including offshore interfaces between jack-up barges and fixed platforms, skid frames and panels, hydraulic fluid reservoirs etc. for use on fixed platforms, floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, and turrets. He also has experience in the assessment of offshore deck structures to support additional loading, and design and development of subsea structural installations in steel and reinforced concrete.
He is the office specialist in the design of pressure testing enclosures and protection structures for onshore and offshore projects.
Kevin also provides Due Diligence services to clients in the renewable energy sector for the review and sign-off of Written Schemes of Examination (WSE) for Pressure Systems in accordance with the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR 2000), and lifting equipment in accordance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER 1998).

Kevin is a Incorporated Civil Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the construction industry covering civil and structural engineering design, structural surveys and concept designs for both onshore and offshore projects.
His offshore design experience covers the design and review of offshore structures, including interface bridges and stair towers, skid frames, panels and fluid reservoirs, flare booms, lifting apparatus and pipe supports for use on fixed platforms and floating production, storage and off-loading (FPSO) vessels. Kevin has experience in the design of subsea reinforced concrete installations for pipe support and impact protection, sea-fastenings for offshore transportation of components, and assessment of fixed platform decks to support additional loading.
Kevin is familiar and competent in the preparation of structural designs in accordance with BS EN 12079, DNV 2.7-1, DNV 2.7-3, Lloyd’s Register, Department of Energy (DoE), Norsok, ISO, Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Reports, National Defence Research Committee (NDRC), British Standards (BS) and Eurocode (BS-EN) standards, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Noble Denton and AISC codes of practice / rules.

Nathan Blowers - Principal Civil & Structural Engineer

Nathan is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 17 years’ experience working in the construction and offshore industries covering civil and structural engineering design, structural surveys, condition appraisals and specification of maintenance and repair schemes. He also has project management experience for both onshore and offshore projects.
Having completed his Masters degree in Oil & Gas Structural Engineering in 2015 Nathan spent 3 years working for a local firm as an Offshore Structural Design Engineer. In this role he was solely responsible for structural design of offshore oil, gas and renewable energy projects undertaken by the company. Together with knowledge gained from his degree studies, Nathan has built-up a wealth of experience in the offshore sector designing and verfiying structures to many different offshore design codes and rules, including BS EN 12079, DNV 2.7-1, DNV 2.7-3, Lloyd’s Register, Department of Energy (DoE), Norsok, ISO, Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Reports, National Defence Research Committee (NDRC), British Standards (BS) and Eurocode (BS-EN) standards, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Noble Denton and AISC.

As well as his offshore design experience, Nathan also has a sound background in the design and detailing of onshore building structures, roads, drainage systems and other civil engineering structures ranging from small domestic alteration projects, through to new-build housing developments and more complex industrial and commercial developments.
Nathan is also experienced in the preparation of drainage strategies and liason with local authorities, highways departments and utilities suppliers with regard to new developments, and utilities connections.

Adam Croft - Engineering & CAD Technician
Adam has over 17 years’ experience using AutoCAD and Revit software to prepare plans, sections and detailing drawings for civil engineering, structural engineering and offshore engineering projects, and 3D models. He also has extensive surveying experience, including carrying out measured building and topographic surveys, crack width monitoring to assist with building defects surveys and reports, and preparation of detailed survey drawings.
Whilst he has a wealth of knowledge regarding onshore buildings and structures, he also has experience and knowledge in the offshore industry as a result of his previous employment with Perenco UK & Pipeshield International. This included maintenance and design of topside and subsea structures.
Adam is currently studying for a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship at City College Norwich with support from the company Directors and staff. This will result in Adam achieving Technician membership (EngTech) with the Institution of Civil Engineers. As Adams experience and knowledge develops and grows he is becoming increasingly involved in the preparation of structural designs and verification calculations for smaller projects, detailed steel fabrication drawings, and reinforced concrete detailing drawings and bar bending schedules.

Guilherme completed his BSc Physics degree at University of Hull in 2018, and joined Technicus Consulting as a Graduate Engineer later the same year. Guilherme is a very capable physicist and mathematician as a result of his studies, and has the drive and desire to learn the skills he needs to become a very capable civil or structural engineer.
In a short space of time with Technicus Consulting he has developed the capability to prepare structural general arrangements, sections and details drawing for onshore and offshore projects we get involved with. He is also getting more involved in site surveys, soils investigations, undertaking small scale structural design projects (with assistance from our experienced engineers), and preparing civil and structural engineering drawings for projects using AutoCAD software.
Guilherme has aspirations to become a Chartered Structural Engineer, and will be commencing a his Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship at City College Norwich in Q3 2019.
